SCW NEWSWATCH: "Sources: Power 5 Conferences Talking About No Fall Football" - ESPN 8.9.20

ESPN reports on rumors about major conferences scrambling to revisit whether to have 2020 fall football amidst the still-unfolding Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic. The reports come on the heels of the non-major MAC deciding to cancel all fall sports.

"... Power 5 conference[] [commissioners] held an emergency meeting ... Sunday ... [amidst] growing concern among college athletics officials that the upcoming football season and other fall sports can't be played because of the coronavirus pandemic, sources told ESPN. Several sources ... indicated ... that Big Ten presidents, following a meeting on Saturday, are ready to pull the plug on ... fall sports ... and ... wanted to gauge if commissioners and university presidents and chancellors from ... other Power 5 conferences ... will fall in line ...."

ESPN also spoke with independent ACC partner Notre Dame's athletic director:

"Notre Dame has close ties to the Power 5 ... join[ing] the ACC in football this year ... due to ... the pandemic. Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick verbalized one of the central issues with altering the season. 'My view is if we change course, we better be able to articulate the reason for doing so to our student-athletes' ..."

According to ESPN, ACC athletic directors meet Monday, with PAC-12 presidents and chancellors meeting Tuesday. The cable network also reports that apparently the ACC, SEC and Big 12 might wish to wait and gauge the situation as entire student bodies return to campus this month.
