AP STYLE: Muslim Hajj
Hajj, hajji, hajjah
AP Style now capitalizes "Hajj" — the AP Style spelling for the Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca.
However, similar terms referring to pilgrims on the Hajj are left in lowercase, not capitalized.
hajji - a male pilgrim on the hajj
hajjah - a female pilgrim on the hajj
The AP Stylebook observes that the pilgrimage to Mecca is required at least once in a lifetime for every Muslim who is physically and financial able to make the journey.
The pilgrimage occurs during the Islamic lunar month of Dhul-Hijja, the 12th and final month on the Islamic calendar.
(SCW 6.29.23)
We now capitalize Hajj, the pilgrimage to Mecca required once in a lifetime of every Muslim who can afford it and is physically able to make it. The Hajj occurs once a year during the Islamic lunar month of Dhul-Hijja, the 12th and final month of the Islamic calendar year.
