AP STYLE: Injuries
Injuries may be suffered, sustained or received.
(This rule was reworked in 2021.)
For references to injuries, it is often possible to adopt simpler phrasing.
"They were injured during the pep rally" rather than "They suffered injuries at the pep rally."
In 2021, we revised our guidance on the word injuries. We now say they may be suffered, sustained or received.
