In Monday trading, the tech-heavy NASDAQ Composite fell 0.9%, benchmark S&P 500 dropped 0.8% and the  Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.7%.

The 10-year Treasury yield, benchmark for mortgage rates, corporate bond rates, and interest rates on various loans, climbed climbed above 5.23% in the morning, its new highest point since 2007, then settled to 5.23% late-afternoon, still up almost 7 basis points since Friday.

Oil prices, still hanging upon events and perceptions relating to the Middle East, climbed when President Donald Trump rejected Iran’s proposal to open the Strait of Hormuz for a week, yet were offset partly by Saudi Arabia resuming East-West pipeline operations and related petroleum sales. Overall, U.S. benchmark West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude future climbed 0.5% to $92.85 late-afternoon, while international benchmark Brent crude futures climbed 1.3% to $105.70.

The U.S. dollar index rose 0.2% against a selection of foreign currencies to $101.21 late afternoon. Gold futures dropped 3.7% to $4,160 per ounce late afternoon.

Coming up this week, and watched for by investors, Consumer Spending data gets announced Wednesday and the U.S. jobs report comes out Friday.

The Federal Reserve reputedly is expected to continue emphasizing inflation and possibly, or perhaps likely, raise interest rates again late-October.
